તીર્થયાત્રા

ભારત તીર્થોની ભૂમિ કહેવાય છે. વેદ-ઉપનિષદના કાળમાં નદીના સંગમ સ્થાનોને પવિત્ર ગણવામાં આવતા હતા અને તેમાં સ્નાન કરવાનું માહાત્મ્ય દર્શાવવામાં આવ્યું હતું. સમય જતાં કેવળ નદીના સંગમને જ નહીં પરંતુ પર્વતના શિખરો, મંદિરો કે ગુફા-તળાવો અને સરોવરોને પણ તીર્થસ્થાનોની ગરિમા બક્ષવામાં આવી. તીર્થસ્થાનોની મહત્તાને સ્થાનવિશેષ કરતાં વ્યક્તિ-વિભૂતિ વિશેષની સાથે વધુ સંબંધ છે. ભારતના બધા જ પ્રમુખ તીર્થસ્થાનો એક કે વધુ દેવી-દેવતા સાથે સંકળાયેલા છે. પાછળથી તે યાદીમાં સમર્થ સંતપુરુષોના જન્મસ્થાનો કે કર્મસ્થાનોનો પણ ઉમેરો થયો. તીર્થસ્થાનો સાથે દંતકથાઓ અને ચમત્કારની વાતો પણ જાણ્યે-અજાણ્યે જોડાઈને લોકજીભે વહેતી થઈ.
ઉત્તર, દક્ષિણ, પૂર્વ કે પશ્ચિમ - જ્યાં પણ જાઓ,  ભારતના લગભગ દરેક પ્રદેશમાં એવા સ્થાનો મળી આવે છે કે જે કોઈ ને કોઈ રીતે દેવી-દેવતા કે સંતપુરુષો સાથે સંકળાયેલા હોય. એક રીતે જોતાં એમ કહેવું ખોટું નથી કે સમગ્ર ભારત તીર્થભૂમિ છે. દેશ તેમજ પરદેશના અસંખ્ય શ્રદ્ધાળુ ભક્તજનો પોતાની આસ્થા અને શ્રદ્ધાની જ્યોતને જલતી રાખી તેવા તીર્થસ્થાનોની યાત્રા કરે છે અથવા જીવનની પરિસમાપ્તિ પહેલાં કરવાની કામના રાખે છે.

વિષમ કહેવાતા વર્તમાન કાળમાં પણ તીર્થસ્થાનોની યાત્રા કરવાની ભાવના મરી પરવારી નથી, કદાચ વધુ બળવત્તર બની છે. પ્રત્યેક વરસે અગાઉના વર્ષ કરતાં વિશેષ સંખ્યામાં લોકો ચાર ધામ, અમરનાથ કે ડાકોર-અંબાજીની યાત્રા કરે છે. સ્વાનુભવ, દેવી-દેવતાની કૃપાના પ્રસંગો, દેખાદેખી કે આધુનિક સુખ સગવડો તેમાં કારણભૂત હોઈ શકે. ગમે તે હોય, હિંદુઓના વ્યક્તિગત જીવનમાં તીર્થયાત્રાનું આગવું મહત્વ રહ્યું છે.

પુરાતન કાળથી હિમાલય સિદ્ધોનું ઘર કે આશ્રયસ્થાન ગણાય છે. ભારતની ઉત્તર-પૂર્વ સરહદે વિસ્તરેલ હિમાલયમાં અનેક નામી અનામી સંત અને સિદ્ધપુરુષો વાસ કરતા હોવાનું મનાય છે. હિમાલયની રહસ્યમય વાતો સાંભળી પશ્ચિમના કેટલાય સંશોધકો એની મુલાકાત લઈ ચુક્યા છે. આમ તો ભારતના પ્રત્યેક ખૂણે મહાપુરુષોનું પ્રાકટ્ય થતું આવ્યું છે, પરંતુ આદિ ગ્રથોમાં અવારનવાર ઉલ્લેખ પામેલ હોવાથી હિમાલયનું આકર્ષણ અને રહસ્ય અકબંધ રહ્યું છે.

સુપ્રસિદ્ધ સંત શ્રી યોગેશ્વરજી પોતાના લગભગ બે દાયકાના સાધનાકાળ દરમ્યાન દેવભૂમિ તરીકે સુપ્રસિદ્ધ હિમાલયના વિવિધ તીર્થોમાં વિહર્યા. તેમણે પોતાની આગવી દૃષ્ટિથી ન માત્ર તીર્થસ્થાનોના ઐતિહાસિક મહત્વને પીછાન્યું પરંતુ તે સ્થાનવિશેષમાં વિચરણ કરતા સમર્થ સિદ્ધ સંતપુરુષોની પણ મુલાકાત લીધી. પોતાની સાધનાત્મક ભૂમિકા પરથી તેમણે સાધના માટે યોગ્ય એવા સ્થાનોને શોધ્યા. આધ્યાત્મિક પરમાણુ બળવત્તર હોય અને સાધના માટે વિશેષ ઉદ્દીપક વાતાવરણનો જ્યાં અનુભવ થયો તે તે સ્થાનોને બીજા સાધકોના લાભાર્થે લેખન દ્વારા પ્રકાશિત કર્યા. એ અનુભવનો અક્ષરદેહ એટલે જ તીર્થયાત્રા.

શ્રી યોગેશ્વરજીએ તીર્થસ્થાનોની માહિતી કલમ પર ઉતાર્યે ઘણાં વરસો થઈ ગયા. તે પછી દરેક તીર્થસ્થાનોનો ઝડપી વિકાસ થયો અને થઈ રહ્યો છે. યાત્રીઓ માટે અનેક પ્રકારની સુવિધાઓ ઉપલબ્ધ કરવામાં આવી રહી છે. એને ઉપલક્ષમાં લેતા પ્રસ્તુત માહિતી કદાચ અમુક અંશે જૂની લાગશે. તે છતાં બહુધા માહિતી સાધકોને ઉપયોગી નીવડશે એ ભાવનાથી અહીં પ્રસ્તુત કરવામાં આવી છે.

Tirthas are sacred places where Hindus travel and the course of action of going to such pilgrim places is called Tirth-yatra. In Sanskrit, the word 'tirtha' means river ford, steps to a river, or place of pilgrimage. In Vedic times, tirthas meant only those sacred places associated with water, but by the time of the Mahabharata, tirtha had come to denote any holy place, be it a lake, mountain, forest, or cave. For devout Hindus, tirthas are not just physical locations, but spiritual fords, the meeting place of heaven and earth, places where one crosses over the cycle of birth and death to attain salvation.

Although tirthas are primarily those places where a god or goddess has dwelled, there are other reasons to accord sanctity to certain places. In the Hindu tradition, Saints and Sages who lead exemplary lives enlightens their environments with the sanctity that accrues from their spiritual practices. Devotees who visit those places derive inspiration even after the death of the saint. Over many centuries, folk tales about the lives of the saints attained legendary proportions, attracting pilgrims from great distances. Many times extraordinary incidents takes place and when people know about it, the fame of saint as well as of that place grow multifold, attracting even more pilgrims.

In India all temples are considered sacred and visitors to the temples may be described as pilgrims. Here we have considered only those places where pilgrims from a geographic area beyond its immediate region are attracted. The primary intention of a pilgrimage is to have the vision/darshan of the resident deity. Hindus believe that the deity is actually manifest in the image, statue, or icon of the temple. In that sense, darshan means to have a spiritual communion with the deity.

Here, we have highlighted well-known North Indian pilgrim places. Shri Yogeshwarji, during his years of penance in holy Himalayas, traveled extensively to the width and breadth of  India and visited well known pilgrim places. Primarily among them were places in Northern India. With a view to help other aspirants, he  elaborated his travelogue in his book entitled 'Tirth Yatra'. Though his description about various places is quite old (between 1940-1970), basic information will sure help many. Readers are urged to verify information before making any travel plans.
